Wizard of Oz Party Ideas

The Wizard of Oz was first published as a book in 1900, and the movie that made it eternally popular was released over 70 years ago, but the timeless tale of Dorothy, The Scarecrow, The Tin Man, and The Cowardly Lion remains a favorite, even with small children. The Wizard of Oz makes a great theme for a party, as there are plenty of themed supplies available. But what games and activities work with a Wizard of Oz themed party? Here are just a few ideas:

Broom Relay Race – Cover two shoeboxes with yellow paper to make yellow bricks. Mark two x’s on the ground, one for the start and one, a reasonable distance away, for the finish line. Divide the party guests into two teams and give each team a ball and a broom. Each player uses the broom to sweep the ball up to the “finish” brick and back again. Every member of the team gets a turn and of course the winning team is the one that finishes first!

Melt the Wicked Witch – Let your party guests recreate the demise of the Wicked Witch of the West. Outside the house mount a drawing (or a printed cut-out) of the evil one herself and let the kids throw water balloons at her until the paper is soaking wet and falls apart.

Pin the Heart on The Tin Man – AAll the Tin Man ever wanted was a heart, so let the party guests play The Wizard and give him one. Pin up a picture of the Tin Man and make some “hearts” from sturdy construction paper or cardboard. Affix a little Scotch tape to the back of each. Blindfolded, each child “pins” her heart to the Tin Man and the child who gets closest to right spot is the winner.
